Not important at all, simply because life on earth is and always has been a cruel competition for survival and the successful transmission of genes. There have been numerous extinction events along the way. Even if humanity were to acheive some kind of environmental homeostasis, eventually forces at the solar system level would drive the earth back into an ice age and mass extinction.

True - for organisms that have 0 control outside their immediate surroundings.

But humans have good sized brains, world-wide communication, written language to cross generational boundaries, organization, technology, etc. Giving us at least the capability to evolve beyond "survival of the fittest". Naive?
