I suspect it was the cell phone more than the wifi router...

as well as the constant temptation to check it for messages there is the random 3am buzzing as some app sends a spam notification.

Yes, although I've seen some routers (and other electronic devices) that have coil whine (which would be very distracting for sleep.)
