> When we buy a physical product, we accept that it won’t change in its lifetime. We’ll use it until it wears off, and we replace it. Not true. We accept that physical products WILL change due to wear and tear, repairs, and even deliberate modifications. It's true that car pedals will stay in the same position, and a table will keep having four legs, but their parts WILL be replaced. Physical products can also have bugs, hence the recall campaigns that happen now and then. Software just makes it easier to replace and modify, and open source allows more people to do that. It just happens that software runs on a physical product (a.k.a. hardware) that has a much lower need for maintenance than a car or a piece of fabric, so you can use it for longer if that pleases you. |
