I find this article strange and somewhat irritating.

It seems to imply that people are shy because it was trendy in media? Now that shy characters are no longer popular, you should just stop being shy because it's harming your personal brand and career.

Perhaps I'm not understanding the thrust of the article. It does make references to media and internet culture that I haven't experienced.

I think there's something there - I feel like there's a sort of glamourisation of shyness on some social media, as if claiming it as a label inducts you into a special club. I can be shy, like many people, but I can't fathom those who claim it as a special quality to be treasured.

They're trying to find others who identify in the same way they do.

It's the same as people who work long hours collectively complaining and one-upping one another, competing for who does the most grueling shifts. Just people wanting a group to identify with.
