Foilen comes from the French word meaning ‘to trample’ because gold is one of the few materials that can be continuously crushed by hand until it is 100nm thick. Ancient Egyptians were known to do this around 5000 BC or so. Cool to think of the journey of this technology to the northern kingdoms over many generations. |
