An old-school, locally-hosted homepage with a links section is surprisingly useful and flexible.

Most browser-based or third-party bookmarking tools ... leave me cold.

(The difficulty of accessing locally-hosted pages is another issue, especially on mobile devices, though ... options exist.)

I'm not a fan of "social" tools with a "public-activity-by-default" mode.

What I read and bookmark is by default intensely private. I might want to share selected items, but that's on a case-by-case basis, and often with a specific individual or audience.

I think you have an entirely different use case in mind, and I'm not it.
