Why is it that someone who is trained as an intelligence officer and almost certainly knows how information system security / audit works often seems to make obvious mistakes in their attempt to defect to a foreign adversary? It seems odd that someone with this level of expertise would make obvious incriminating google searches and similarly send incriminating emails. Then again, we may only be learning of those who are (paradoxically) lacking in basic operational security. Was this person perhaps hoping to get caught to raise awareness for their reports of corruption? |

So if you analyze data, someone else has collected it, and someone else gets your output, and everybody has different opsec requirements.
And everyone has different domain expertise. The mathematicians who come up with encryption algorithms likely don’t have the same expertise as the people who decap chips to extract keys.

History has shown this is definitely the case, both in espionage and crime in general.
