The real exciting thing about Virtual Power Plants, is that they expose the cost information to the end user. Like software reliability, additional 9s of service get progressively more expensive. Rolling blackouts on the hottest summer days are BAD and have costs associated with them, and peaking plants make a ton of money by running only a few days per year. It's almost the grid scale equivalent of having a gas generator so you can run extra window AC units because you keep tripping the breaker. Much cheaper to just turn the thermostat up a little bit and accept it being warmer, or turn off your cryptominers when the cost is that high. |
