80% of the time people should display a table, 15% a time-series or line chart. The other 5% is probably wrong. Anyone that asks for pie charts, 3d charts,... isn't a real data user ;)

I once added a speedometer for production rate compared to avg over previous X weeks, as a widget demo. It ended up on every exec’s dashboard and on a big screen.

I’m not sure what they were trying to manage, but it was purdy and looked dashboardy.

Pie charts and 3D charts are used by real data users to lie to customers. (Customers love that shit.)
What would you recommend for demographics analysis if not a pie chart?
There are plenty of options. Treemap, waffle chart, a bar plot.

There's nothing special about demographic data.

Unless you're displaying amount of a pie or pizza that's been consumed so far, don't use a pie chart
