Networking doesn't necessarily make a job search itself easier. What it does is make it less likely you ever need to search. People will let you know when opportunities arise, or invite you to join them on projects. So you end up actually searching less often.

As far as how to do it, just do your work well, treat people well, and be the kind of person they want on their teams in the future.
