Everyone complains about how expensive Splunk is but the amount of compute and storage consumed by processing logs is ridiculous.

I feel like we should be talking about the sad state of logging where we think it’s perfectly ok to dump millions of 10k stack trace dumps and think that should be cheap.

I once sat down and ran the numbers of what it would cost to host logs myself on the "fanciest" cloud hosts I could find: "storage optimised" Azure Lasv3 series VMs that have AMD EPYC CPUs and 8x NVMe SSD drives.

It worked out to be something like 20x to 30x cheaper than any of the cloud solutions such as Splunk or Azure Log Analytics.
