People sometimes criticize Apple for sticking with Lightning apparently unaware that it predated USB-C by multiple product generations: once you’ve shipped hundreds of millions of anything and have a bunch of third-party vendors, switching is going to be unavoidably slow and messy.

Not for years. Lighting came out before USB-C was standardized: September 12th, 2012 vs. August 11th, 2014 (final spec) and January 7th, 2015 (first shipping device, the Nokia N1).
