The US legally is zero notice, but it's pretty standard to give 2 weeks. I would hope that if they require 6 months that they would also be required to pay for that 6 months even if they decide to fire you immediately.

You don't need to quit in the USA. You can simply stop going to that job and start working elsewhere.
