They're two names for the same thing, but yes, people should use the current name.

Also, it was never “OSX”, like the article uses, but so many people call it that.

I disagree. It is unambiguous.

maacOS (in addition to bad capitalisation) could refer to an older and completely different OS.

Meybe not in this context, but it in general clearer is better.
