Cybersecurity in a Growing Company
3 points by birdjam 1011 days ago
Hi,

I am one of the founders of a startup, and we are in the process of expanding. Currently there are 8 of us, but it's looking like there will be 20-30 quite soon.

I am looking for any resources around scaling our internal IT bits (laptops, phones ect.) in a way which is secure. I get how things would look when we are (hopefully) ~100 and can justify an IT manager, but it's the bit in the middle I am unsure on.

Any pointers would be hugely appreciated!

You're going to want an IT Manager well before 100 people. I handle systems integrations & cybersecurity compliance for a 15 - 20 person PR, marketing, & design firm and I am constantly busy with everything from major operations initiatives, major systems setup, and being available for end user IT issues.

That being said, get a Mobile Device Manager (expect a year to get it configured to where you want), get a company password manager, get a cell phone plan figured out (expect to spend $$$$$ on phone systems).

All of these systems will require significant time for set up & deployment, especially if you are doing it in such a way as to grow your compliance posture at the same time.

Thanks, definitely going to checkout MDM software. If you don't mind me asking, what is your job title/role? IT Manager?
What you're looking for is commonly known as MDM (mobile Device management) software. It lets you manage laptop and phone configurations such as requiring a lock screen. If you're a windows shop you'll want active directory at up. While you can do this yourself, most smaller companies will look for a MSP (managed service provider) to do the setup and ongoing management including laptop setup. There are a lot of them out there so it's worth shopping around to find one with both good pricing and more importantly one that's responsive to your needs. Investors and other startups in your area might have suggestions on good ones
Thanks, that's really helpful. I'll have a look at both MDM software and options on outsourcing it to an MSP.
I like this newsletter: https://www.lastweekasavciso.com/

I'm not aware of any how-to guides, but have you googled?

I'll check out that newsletter, thanks!
