You're obviously thinking of Helios 44 and other Russian lenses, but there are also many outstanding m42 lenses, including Pentax Takumars.

I have a 50 1.4 takumar, it's optically not great by today's standards. You really do only buy it for the look and feel (or because it's so cheap)
