In emacs land “tramp” is the thing that does this. It is pervasive enough that if the files you are editing on some remote host are in a git repository, then magit just works, same as on the local machine (mod latency). Tramp is the modern-ish version of this facility, I think a little more than 20 years old now? There was a predecessor that I used back in the 1990s whose name I forget, which allowed remote editing of files and browsing remote filesystems with dired, but not remote commands as needed for features l like compilation-mode.
