I'm not an expert by any means, but here's the gist of my understanding of the statin controversy from reading Metabolical: - There's two types of LDL cholesterol that are measured together in a standard fasting lipid profile: type A LDL and type B LDL - Type A LDL makes up 80% of LDL and is increased by dietary fat consumption - Type A LDL is not predictive of heart disease nor does it drive the accumulation of plaque in the arteries - Type A LDL is lowered by statins - Type B LDL makes up 20% of LDL and is predictive of heart attacks - Type B LDL is not lowered by statins - Taking statins comes with a bunch of side effects - Selling statins has been a lucrative business Citations at https://robertlustig.com/metabolical/metabolical-references-... for pages 34 through 39 |
