Yeah, I first heard about Venmo because it was touted (or derided) as an app that rewarded conspicuous consumption, because every transaction is public, and all the kids knew it, and used it to brag about purchases.

And now it seems to have evaded notice in this regard, and people think it's just another payment processor, like Zelle or PayPal. Popularity can have interesting effects.
