I suppose that "stigmata" makes for a sensational headline, but it is important to note that true stigmata are mysterious and miraculous. Many a charlatan has been caught, trying to cut into himself/herself, or cause his own wounds in the "correct" places. The only authentic instances of religious stigmata are those which are wholly unexplained by medical/physical science, and thoroughly tested by contemporary professionals.
The subjects of true stigmata also suffer greatly from those wounds, because they are real and physical, and you don't enjoy the benefits of anaesthesia, cauterization, or sutures.
