Ask HN: The Economist alternatives
10 points by daavidhauser 1046 days ago
I’ve been subscribed to the Economist for a few years now. However I started to dislike their western bias and extensive war coverage. Moreover I am mostly interested in the Business and Finance sections, however political topics take up the majority of the space. Does anyone have some suggestions for a high quality magazine with a focus on economics, business and finance?

Hard to beat FT and The Economist, gets to the point quickly. I do not like the weekend section in FT about "how to spend it"

The WSJ is too heavy, takes too much time to read and overwhelming. Barrons is not the publication it used to be.

Bloomberg Business Week looks interesting, but where I spend my money & time is limited and think my subscriptions to FT and The Economist are better spent.

I'm not sure I would avoid the war coverage and potential conflicts down the road.

This is so true and really sad. Their bias was really appalling, downright revolting during the recent Elections in Turkey.

As a life rule now, I look for and only read independent work, and I suggest you do the same. This is the only way now.

Newsletters and reader-supported Journalists/Authors. Personal blogs of some economists and business reporters. Podcasts.

You'd be surprised but there are some really good Finance/business info on Twitter (X), basically people in the frontlines of the industry giving you pure, fluff-free information, the "FinTwit" community is pretty active.

Hope this helps!

Everything is political and has bias. War coverage is important for economics, business, and finance. The economist is pretentious but IMO it is not a "western bias" but a "oxbridge" bias. I actually like my news source to have values, and western values are not a bad set of values to choose.

Other than the FT, I think you are looking for wire services like Reuters.

Examples of this bias?
Maybe Bloomberg BusinessWeek?
FT ? WSJ ?
I was really disappointed with FT...
