Public libraries in the USA, funded by tax revenue, have been offering resources for "free" for a while and I the main changes I would like to see there are maintaining covid-era abeyance of late fees and a solution to the digital media problem, where authors and publishers get paid enough, but not too much (I don't know how much that is), for their work. To what degree would a tax-funded model work for other things we enjoy and value? Is there a way to do this while "keeping government out of my [government-supported benefit]"? Twitter seemed to be important for fire alerts, for example, and I would consider rejoining and even contributing if it were more like HN and also like public libraries; moderated, with a healthy degree of independence, and a responsibility to serve the public at large. |
