Chrome broke this recently, for shortcuts that have no substitution.
The ominibox history takes over. For example, I used to be able to just type, "yt" and go to youtube, but now Ominbox history replaces it with my most recent history item that has "yt" in it shortcut: "yt", goes to youtube
