People don't like paying for stuff and would prefer to jump through multiple hoops in order to get an inferior product that doesn't cost anything.

I disagree, I think people will pay for things that they believe add value to their life. I think a lot of paid apps just don’t add the value that the people who developed the apps think they’re worth.
