I think the OPs concern is more with his lack of experience combined with his age. Not just that he's in his 30s, but that he's in his 30s and has almost no work experience. I'm pretty sure there is a general consensus that young people learn faster, and this might seep into a decision in whether to hire a 20 something with no experience or 30 something with no experience.
