This is super interesting for the historical medical context and portrayal of anatomy. It's certainly more than a bit gruesome - the "neoclassical nude" is interesting as well - particularly the extreme musculature but modest size of reproductive organ.
The depiction of scale is par for the course but made me think of "pectoral size" in body builders throughout the years. Modern body builders focus on the chest but maybe 100 years ago less so - I've read these were just aesthetics of the times.
Was moving a piece of furniture a couple months ago and got an awkward wood sliver that I ended up leaving in since it was near impossible to remove - couldn't imagine needing to deal with broken shaft arrows jeez... how far we've come as a species for better or worse |
