Reading this I get flashbacks from HDD era, perhaps this is already a case but:

Put a SSD in it. Then clone the system from old to new drive. Even the cheapest ones make huge difference but if it's old machine, don't go too crazy because bandwidth could be limited by SATA2

Definitely a good suggestion. Some appropriate information to supplement your above point would be that the price of SSDs has gone way down over the past few years. A 1TB SSD can be attained for around £45 in the UK.
