It seems like a poor attempt at juicing some metrics in the short term. But what good is converting users with no account who read and don't post, into users who still read and don't post? Net ad views is the same. Better tracking?

Musk needs cash from ads. I'm guessing that he's doing it for better pageviews.

Anyway public persons and companies need to be see .. so this can kick twitter pretty hard. Especially when they can have own instances.
