This is not what you think it is. This is necessary because GPL is incompatible with App Store. (It doesn't seem to be rigorously enforced, but search for "GNU Go App Store".)

Go was GPLv3, which is clearly incompatible with the App Store ToS. The situation with GPLv2 is considerably more ambiguous.
