100% of that energy cost is the electrolysis, recycling has no comparable step. There are additional energy costs for processing the aluminum into useful items on top of this that are roughly the same for primary and recycled aluminum. Overall, recycled aluminum requires only about 5% of the energy that primary aluminum requires. |
