I found a Lemmy instance with a satisfying set of local communities that's also federated with some other high-traffic instances- BeeHaw.org

Overwrote and deleted my Reddit account and I've been trying not to look back, but the habit is a little tough to break

Beehaw isn't a good steward of the federated model: they kneejerk defederate at the slightest provocation. I'd pick any instance but theirs.
