More sense to put the Crimean canal source further up river (Dnipro Dam) to get more gravity rather than pump feed. Also, too little of an elevation drop that resulted in a rather large amount of land flooded for the Kakhovka reservoir that could be seen as legacy of Soviet dam building fervor.
no doubt modern times allow for better technical alternatives...im all for ukranians to manage their land as best as they wish
