It's smart if you realize that they never had a choice. No matter what Musk says, they could do vision-only or nothing at all. Google started their program in 2009 and had a pile of cash. Tesla started their program in 2015 ish and until 2019 they were in a precarious financial position. So they never had the money or time to take Google head on. With vision, they could at least use their position to their advantage. And it's a good bet. There's tons more to self driving than perceiving the world (lidar does not help a driver what to do in a novel and ambiguous situation, it's not a perception problem) and Tesla's vision is quite good based on all the FSD videos on YouTube. |
