The Council of Trent was, as someone else pointed out, a very important event. In contemporary discussions between catholics and protestants it still holds, rightfully so, a large role in its definitions of what catholics believe and what errors are alleged to have been made by certain protestants. A quick search of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, for example, promulgated in 1992, reveals 88 results. Christianity, if I remember correctly, is the largest religion in the world, catholics make up most of them, so important historical happenings such as ecumenical councils have an impact on a vast amount of people even if just indirectly. |
