Knowing Microsoft it's going to be one of those ugly, slow UWP apps. So I assume I will keep having to install 7zip

Your files will be uploaded to Azure, decompressed in the cloud, and downloaded as uncompressed files.
In-flight they will be brotli compressed for efficiency.

The whole system will use between 5x and 50x the energy of just decompressing locally.

I was assuming it would be the same UI that they currently use for .zip, i.e. basically just the file explorer but with an extra tab for the extra functions
Yep, and with the same limitations like not being able to extract to a onedrive folder consistently.

Windows = Microsoft program OneDrive = Microsoft program Extract tool = Microsoft program

Microsoft = 2.33 trillion dollar company.

Having 3 programs coded by Microsoft and baked into the operating system or included by default with the OS install actually work together: impossible

Every UWP app I have installed has been horrible in terms of ui, half-baked & unreliable.

And these are on the M$ store too!

Is the M$ store even supposed to be used of serious software? I can't help but feel it is not intended to be taken seriously when I get flooded with ads for games and kids movies upon opening it.
My favorite is when I get promoted to open the store to pay $1 for the ability to open .heic files from explorer
don't get me started on the calculator that doesn't understand 1.23 and 1,23 are the same and instead of just using it, silently ignores the input when pasting it in from somewhere else -- and no, you can't change this setting without changing your computer's region settings.
