In 2003 I was in college with a Mac G3 iBook. A room mate showed me Linux and I wanted to try it out. Yellow Dog Linux (A fork from Red Hat) was the stable/best option for PowerPC newbies. I loved YDL but quickly realized that everything was a year or more out of date and by the end of the year I had distro-hopped my way over to Gentoo where I could get updated versions of GIMP, Inkscape and Firefox. It took a few semesters but I did finally learn not to do any exciting upgrades the week a project was due. |
