Odd that the article author lists “Data as an instrument of coloniality: A panel discussion on digital and data colonialism” as an example of them doing nothing - digital colonialism is an important subject and one that many larger institutions seem afraid to cover.

Indeed, and it's a topic that would not be covered by big tech. I think this idea that academia must compete on the same terrain as big AI companies is misguided. There are areas where only academia can be successful, because they would not be profitable, and others where academia doesn't have the resources.
Yup. I think it will be pretty important for academia to serve as an intermediary between the possibilities being presented by big tech on the one hand, and the concerned regulatory bodies and lawmakers on the other. It's the only place you will find individuals who actually understand stuff like LLMs without necessarily having a vested interest in any one firm.
