I also never really got into Mastodon. My belief is that you still need to build a 10x better product, and Mastodon hasn't achieved that. Now, the upside for Mastodon is - they have a great platform that a number of people have flocked to bc of the Twitter backlash. Can they create sustainable value for the communities (or people within those communities)? What do people who run these communities want (beyond decentralization)? Personally, I think the crux is reputation-building. You need to give a few Mastodon users a sense of pride in engaging everyday with their community. From the handful of servers I'm on, I don't see this clearly happening yet. But hope they can get there! |
