I can understand makind the API paid, but why disable NSFW for said users if no malicious intent? Afraid of payment providers?

Maybe they want to stop NSFW content creators using post scheduling apps to post their content on dozens of subreddits at once.

NSFW has been a thorn in their side ever since going public, yes. Mostly because investors are morons.
