Their promises are worthless unless all client-side software is open-source and available for inspection with reproducible builds. It is unfortunate that WhatsApp managed to get significant network effects so fast (especially in Europe), meaning that many people feel the "have to" use it. If you "have to" use it: 0: encourage people to switch to Signal, Session, Briar, Matrix, etc. 1: you can use matrix bridges and similar things so you don't have to have Facebook's spyware on your phone. Examples: -beeper.com (pulls together many messaging platforms, WhatsApp Twitter Slack IRC Instagram Telegram...) (can self-host) -element.io operates another matrix-bridge-for-hire (can self-host) -texts.com does something similar, but I don't know the details -probably more I don't know about :-) |
