I've always been 'more productive' when I can have something semi-[un]interesting going in the background :)

I do know several people who can not focus unless it's 'silent', though

...but silence (or quasi silence) lets my mind run, and that [almost always] distracts me from what I'm trying to get done :)

Music with no vocals (classical, chiptune, etc) can work pretty well as long as you don't go down the rabbit hole of "finding music to listen to" every 15 minutes.
