Why not? It's oauth with set permissions... very common nowadays and secure.

eh, i don't mind typing in username "blahblah123" and password "testing123" but clicking something that might be a phishing fake google login screen? With hackernews style no email required you can make an account without giving away anything. Even foo@gmail.com makes me feel bad that someone will try and email whatever fake email I put in and sometimes I might just type a real email by random chance.
