From 1995 to 2018, the US homicide rate went from 8.15 to 5.01. During the same time span, the rate in the UK dropped from 1.55 to 1.12.

The rate dropped 38% in the US and 27% in the UK, which banned handguns in 1996.

*I would've used the most recent US number (2020), but I couldn't find that data for the UK to compare apples to apples.

UK doesn’t have second amendment though. Probably UK had controls before 1996? Put it this way I never feared guns in 1996 at all. Bombs were more of a concern. It can’t have been comparable to the US?
