I don't really get why they would get rid of the 16-column instead of only adding the 12 and mix them with something like <div class="row12"></div>.

Because then you'd end up writing stuff like span6-12 or span1-16. Confused why you'd need 16 also. Any even division you can do in a 16 col grid you can also do in 12.
