I'm in the same boat. I'm not going to give away my phone number to some random company to try out this thing.

A big Thank You to OP and whoever set this up.

Edit: Not working for me. Perhaps the service is being squeezed to death?

You would miss out on trying one of the most significant innovations in a decade because of a phone number? What do you think is going to happen if you share your phone number? Your phone number is certainly readily tired to your name across dozens of public and private databases.

All it takes is someone who has you in their contacts downloading an app that requests contacts permissions. Totally out of your control. It's best to assume your phone number is already public and move your privacy shields somewhere more effective.

Yes. It's a mater of principle.

I don't remember giving my phone number to OpenAI. (they never asked)
They might ask for certain geolocations, as they did for me. Had to use a European phone number before I was able to access the dashboard (I am in East Asia).
I’m in Taiwan and they didn’t ask me? And when I got the plus account they didn’t ask…
Can you please create an account for me? Email in my profile
OpenAI is hardly “some random company”. It’s 49% owned by Microsoft, and has an exclusive commercial license with them.

Its cofounders and original investors are all Silicon Valley luminaries, plus Elon Musk who’s since sold his stake. Cofounders and major investors include Sam Altman (former Y Combinator president and now OpenAI CEO), Reid Hoffman (LinkedIn cofounder), Jessica Livingston (Y Combinator), Peter Thiel (Palantir), Amazon Web Services, Infosys, and OpenResearch (formerly YC Research).

Btw I’m not sure if you need a phone number if you sign up with a social media account like Google.

if you sign up with social you be redirected to enter your name and phone number
Can confirm from India here .. It didn't ask me phone number.
They don’t require a phone number when you create an account. And they have a social login using gmail or Microsoft.

They absolutely do for certain locations.

Have you got a location? Just tried Singapore & Thailand on a vpn and it didn’t ask.
Please inform me how. I've been trying to create an account but cannot as they require a phone number, and my only number is a Google voice account which is not allowed.
What country? I can’t find a country where it’s required…
I'm in the same boat here. Had logged in with my google account which was sufficient for the first days but than suddenly they needed my phone number too.

Germany here.

So I signed up in Thailand and Singapore without a phone number. After I disconnected from the vpn and then signed out to sign back in with my account I got asked for a phone number. I think I dug myself into a hole.
