Ask HN: Do you think an “authentic” social app can work?

I had the idea of creating a social app that is a crossover between TikTok and BeReal.

IMO, video has been used mainly for media instead of social, TikTok is not used to see what your friends are up to but instead to find interesting content from content creators. I think there is a huge opportunity to create an app that is only focused on video, but without the music, and without being highly edited, therefore being more on the social side of things and not media.

My idea would work like this: you would open the app and be greeted by the camera, you would then post a quick video about what you're doing and then receive access to the feed. Once you upload a video, you can browse the feed and see what your friends uploaded and/or what the world is posting. The goal of this is to not have it recommendation engine powered, but instead just focus on seeing what your friends and other people are doing.

The only way to access the feed is if you post a video. It would essentially be the key to unlock your feed.

Is it worth working on this?

You are incentivizing low-effort video-posts (to unlock your feed). This is not a good strategy.
You can say the same thing about BeReal. It's easy to just cover the camera and post a black screen, yet no one does it.
What if you have to keep posting to keep getting access?
