well, as the meme goes, that's what Musk did, he did a couple of "boring" gigs and then went on to do whatever the hell he wants with all the money he got from those.

So the trick seems to be not to write pages about this stuff but try to hit a (as much of a) homerun first, then spend away on your favorite humanity issues. In that sense, effective altruism - until it got hijacked by alleged straight-up thieves - was on to something, except it was just a rehash of the ages-long "put your own mask first" wisdom.
