Many comments haven’t touched on one obvious outcome. Even if Sama and OpenAI stick to their words here, who’s saying that other actors in the space now or in the future will follow suit? Surely OpenAI doesn’t think that if AGI is achieved, that they’ll be the only ones in control of one. No matter how not-open they are (lol), others will always catch up, and in a shorter time than it took OpenAI to originally reach that point.

All things considered, they just shouldn’t. But as all humans do, they will.

It's pure hubris to think they'd be "in control" of it at all, any more than you can "control" the inner mind of a human being.
