The Chinese put that in the ISO-3166 standard. Many statistics tools aggregte data by the ISO two-letter short country code, and automatically shown the full name in output. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_3166_country_codes So yeah there's that. Unless the author somehow add an extra "political correctness" step in country name processing |
