Yeah, I spent a lot of time banging my head against the wall of Zork, and in the end felt it was a "guess what I'm thinking" pastime that was not worth my time.

Yep, I had the same experience with Zork--for me it was "echo". I was playing too rationally and not just trying too many random things "for fun".
